Kappa came right from the Semitic languages unchanged into Greek and passed into Latin and English for the "k" sound.

κ represents:

  • the kappa curve
  • the condition number of a matrix in numerical analysis
  • curvature
  • dielectric constant (usually ε)
  • thermal conductivity (usually a lowercase Latin k)
  • a spring constant (usually a lowercase Latin k)
