Macedonia is the largest and second most populous Greek region. Together with the regions of Thessaly and Thrace, it is often reffered to - unofficially - as northern Greece. Its territory covers most of the region of ancient Macedonia, including the birthplace of Alexander the Great. The region covers an area of some 34,231 sq. km. High ground makes up much of the region with mountains reaching up to 2,919 m while extensive fertile plains lie along the Aegean Sea coast. There are 2341 Hotels in Macedonia.
