Following the release of a video of a Greek man physically abusing his wife at a charity concert this week, the General Secretariat for Gender Equality delivered a stern and blunt response to the matter saying it was “disgusted, angered and saddened” by the incident.

The video, which shows the man pushing his wife down to the ground and then slapping her, has gone viral and has been show on social media sites as well as the local news in Greece.

“What is a man who behaves this way in front of other people capable of behind closed doors?” the secretariat asked on Friday.

The secretariat as well as news outlets have used the unfortunate incident to remind people that there is a 24-hour help hotline, 15900, which is available for victims of abuse as well as some 62 counseling centers and shelters for battered women in Greece.
