Greek PM: Simone Veil ‘a Symbol of Democracy and Historical Memory’ for Europe

“Simone Veil was a symbol of democracy and historical memory for Europe,” Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras wrote on his @tsipras_eu Twitter account on Friday, regarding the death of the French politician, who was the first woman to become president of the European Parliament.

Veil, a lawyer and a survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, had also served as a health minister under Valery Giscard d’Estaing, as a member of the Constitutional Council of France and was Honorary President of the foundation pour la Memoire de la Shoah.She was best known for pushing forward the law legalizing abortion in France on January 17, 1975.
