Distressed Vessel Bound for Italy With 120 Migrants Rescued Near Chania

On Thursday morning a vessel carrying approximately 120 migrants was located 28 nautical miles from the Cape of Chania following a distress call from a passenger on the boat to the emergency line 112.

Several boats went to the aid of the distressed vessel which was experiencing mechanical problems, including a cargo ship, a frontex vessel, a port vessel and a passenger ferry-boat.

The boat was found and is expected to arrive at the port of Souda shortly after 2 pm. There was no further information available as to the origin of the boat. It is being reported that the boat was heading to Italy, but stalled due to mechanical issues.
