Municipal authorities across Greece have started sending crews to spray the piles of garbage in order to prevent contamination.

The trash collectors strike continues for the 10th day with mounts of trash forming in most cities and towns across the country. The mix of decomposing trash and high heat creates a mix that is extremely dangerous for public health.

Τhe growth of microorganisms in the trash that is rotting can cause diseases the Hellenic Center for Disease Control & Prevention (KEELPNO) says. At the same time the trash attracts rodents and insects.

Tuesday’s meeting between Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the municipal workers union (POE-OTA) proved to be fruitless as garbage collectors continue the strike, at least through Thursday, as they claim.
