In the aftermath of the tragedy in Menidi last week where an 11-year-old boy, while attending a school party, was fatally shot in the head by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a 23-year-old member of the Roma community, Public Order Minister Nikos Toskas told Greece’s private TV channel ANT1 that the issues in Menidi consist of many layers and are chronic issues which will take time to work through and resolve.

A lack of social integration of the Roma communities across Greece has been fueled by budget cuts which took much-needed funds out of local municipalities resources towards a community outreach program which aimed to improve the education and social interaction of the Roma.

Many members of the Roma community live in the northwestern suburb of Athens, Menidi and a community outreach program which was operating across the county to help keep Roma children in school and away from crime has suffered from an 80 percent reduction in funding for its budget for 2016 to 2018, reported.
