A recently proposed Muslim ban for Australia by the One Nation political party has been in the forefront of a controversial debate and the newly appointed senator, Greek-Australian Peter Georgiou, has spoken out saying he rejects his party’s proposal.

Georgiou, the son of Greek immigrants spoke out on the ABC radio last week saying: “If they are Muslim and they’ve passed the checks that the Australian government has on it, then I don’t see it as an issue.”

His comments come after the leader of One Nation, Pauline Hanson, recently spoke in support of the ban saying: “Islam is a disease; we need to vaccinate ourselves against that” as well as she has also called for a royal commission on Islam.

Georgiou says that for him personally, his family played a role in influencing his stance on this issue.

“The thing is my parents are immigrants. They came here 42 years ago so, you know, we all embraced Australia,” he said. “I’ve been a very lucky person to be raised in Australia. Australia has given me lots of opportunities and I’m very grateful for it.”
