While visiting the Aegean island of Chios, there are many different sights to take in, however, there is one place that still preserves the island’s medieval character — Kampos village.
The History of Kampos
Located only around 5 kilometers south of Chios Town, this authentic village has recently been proclaimed a historical site by the Ministry of Culture. The history of the village dates back to the island’s Genoese dominance (1346-1566), which is when grand mansions were built and society began to flourish and they created large orchards full of citrus trees — which exist up until today.
Following a catastrophic earthquake which shook Chios in 1881, the buildings that remain today in Kampos are Neoclassical houses with picturesque gardens and terraces lined with flowers.
New Trends of Tourism on Chios
One of the great newer ways to tour Kampos is by renting a bicycle and hitting narrow streets. There are different tours that you can participate in which will show you the best that Kampos has to offer such as small churches, historic sites and breathtaking views of the historical island!
