A major heroin-trafficking ring operating on the island of Corfu, Greece, has been dismantled by the Corfu Police drugs squad after a months-long investigation, the island’s police announced on Friday. The 28-member criminal organization, which imported the drugs from Albania, is estimated to have generated some 480,000 euros in profits in the past 1.5 years. The ring’s suspected members include 15 Greek nationals and 13 Albanian nationals, of which 21 have been arrested and seven are being sought.

A Corfu police spokesman said that the criminal organization had a “pyramid” structure that was led by three Albanian nationals aged 29, 35 and 45 as its top level. The second level was made up of 10 members acting as intermediaries and on the third level were the drug dealers.

The gang smuggled large quantities of heroin into Greece and processed this in an illegal lab found in chaliki, Aitoloakarnania. They then transported the drugs to Corfu where they were sold. Twelve of the 28 members of the gang have prior arrests for drug dealing and 10 are currently in prison.

Police have brought criminal charges against 28 individuals in connection with the case for forming a criminal organization with the aim of importing, storing, transporting and selling heroin. Those arrested will be led before a Corfu public prosecutor.
