The case of a missing 22-year-old woman in Athens turned out to be a case of kidnapping and sexual assault as a 53-year-old visually impaired man had kept her captive and raped her.
The woman is a student and as a social worker was helping the man, who has vision and weight problems. She was aiding the 53-year-old as part of a welfare program called “Help at Home.”
After the woman was reported missing, police officers went to the man’s apartment in Daphne and asked him if he knew of the whereabouts of his helper. The man said that he hadn’t seen her in days and doubted if the policemen were really policemen. However, the police officers heard her scream from inside the house.
Upon entering a room in the apartment, the officers found the 22-year-old naked, tied to a bed and with a camera attached on her head. Inside the room there were sex toys and other cameras as well and the woman had signs of sexual abuse and was obviously drugged.
The man claimed that everything was done with the woman’s consent. Nevertheless police arrested him and he faces charges of rape and kidnapping. Authorities also seized the mans computers as they consider the possibility that he was broadcasting his acts live on the Internet.
According to police, the 53-year-old has been charged of theft and bad checks in the past, and his possible involvement in other criminal offenses is under investigation. Furthermore, his acts, previous record and the advanced technological equipment he is using lead them to believe that he is a fraudster and not truly partially blind as he claims.
