For those, young or old, who love to use their hands and minds to create new objects or applications, the Athens mini Maker Faire exhibition will be hosted for the second consecutive year at the Peristeri Exhibition Center on May 6 and 7.

The Athens Mini Makes Faire is an initiative by the U.S. magazine “Make,” dedicated to  diffusing the culture of making by using digital technology and computers. It is the only exhibition in Greece devoted to technological and traditional makers.

The areas covered by the “making” community are engineering, handicraft, do it yourself (DIY), three-dimensional prints, pottery, robotics, Arduino and Raspberry Pi microprocessors, cooking creations and welds among other things.

“Makers are people with a desire to create. They make constructions to facilitate their everyday life and transform their ideas into objects, “says Stavros Messinis, co-organizer of the exhibition.

Stavros Messinis and his wife, Maria Kalafati, have for many years been two of the most famous startup community figures to be created in Greece, and since 2013, The Cube Athens, is the largest co-working space in the center Athens. Together with Costas Fallis, founder of Fairspro (a company organizing events and exhibitions on crafts and DIY, such as Handicraft), they have been working since last year to offer a place for creators to express themselves in Greece.

“The making community in Greece is bigger than we imagined, as makers are everywhere. A maker can be a young child who builds a structure with bricks to the elderly who creates using natural materials,” says Stavros Messinis.

The exhibition will present constructions and patents from both private and professional makers, for example: hand-made 3D printers, robots, technological applications to facilitate everyday life, hand-made vehicles, musical instruments and handicrafts.

The program also includes workshops where visitors will have the opportunity to create their own projects including: printing objects with three-dimensional printers, learning how to make a Raspberry Pi microprocessor, to loom, to make Robots, handle a CNC machine and more.

Events will  also be scheduled for younger visitors of the exhibition, including a hand-made robot competition, paper rocket launchers, and educational games on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
