Greece’s Foreign Ministry expressed concern that neighboring Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia is in the midst of a deep political crisis after protesters entered the parliament and attacked politicians.
The Foreign Ministry official statement says that Greece is concerned that FYROM is “sliding into deep political crisis” and calls on FYROM’s political rivals to show a “spirit of compromise and collaboration” because there is the danger of “explosive situations.”.
On Thursday, demonstrators swarmed FYROM’s parliament building and assaulted several lawmakers in light of a controversial vote to elect a new parliament speaker. It has been months since FYROM political powers try to form a new government.
Violent clashes followed the attack inside and outside the parliament building. Supporters of former prime minister Nikola Gruevski attacked their opponents of the Social Democrat party in parliament.
SDSM party leader, Zoran Zaev, was one of those attacked and he has been greeted by hundreds of supporters. Zoran Zaev and several other lawmakers from his party appeared outside the Social Democratic headquarters in the capital several hours after the attack.
According to FYROM police, 77 people were injured, including 22 police officers.
