Frontex chief Fabrice Leggeri is meeting today (Thursday) with top Greek officials to discuss the issue of migrant smuggling in the Aegean.

Leggeri is meeting with Migration Policy Minister Yiannis Mouzalas, Shipping Minister Panayiotis Kouroublis, Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Toskas and the chiefs of the Hellenic Police and Coast Guard.

Talks between the executive director of the European Union’s border protection agency and Greek officials will focus on the efforts of Frontex and the Greek coast guard to crack down on human smuggling across the Aegean.

On Tuesday, the dead bodies of 16 migrants were pulled out of the water as their boat coming from Turkey sank off Lesvos. Two of the dead were children.

Two survivors said that about 25 people were on board when the smuggling vessel left Turkey. However, no other survivors were found until Wednesday night.
