Australia will be welcoming the arrival of the nine Evzones who are scheduled to visit Australia for the historical ANZAC Day and the 76th anniversary of the Battle of Crete. The arrival of the nine soldiers of the Greek Presidential Guard had been delayed three days because of a heavy schedule in Greece, members of the Board of the Foundation for Hellenic Studies announced last week.

The nine Evzones, the famous soldiers of the Greek Presidential Guard, are part of the special ceremonies that are set to take place around Australia, such as the War Memorial on North Terrace (Adelaide).

“The nine Evzones and their lieutenants will arrive in Adelaide on Wednesday April 19 and their presence will bestow the Foundation for Hellenic Studies with a sense of great pleasure and honor in being accorded the opportunity to introduce them to our community, to have them participate in significant ceremonies in Adelaide to honor the Anzacs, and to show them our state,” Harry Patsouris, the trustee of the Foundation for Hellenic Studies, told

The events honor the memory of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought in the battle. The Battle of Crete is not one of the best-known conflicts that occurred during WWII, however, it is considered to be one of the most decisive battles of the war, where it was the first and last time that paratroopers were deployed on such a vast scale from the Germans to capture a target during WWII.
