“We were the ones who threw the Greeks in the sea,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a speech on Thursday, in answer to an opponent’s statement.

Speaking to his followers during the referendum campaign rally, Erdogan answered to a statement made by opposition MP Husnu Bozkurt. Erdogan’s opponent had said that they will throw all the supporters of “Yes” in the sea if “No” prevails in the referendum.

The Turkish President’s answer to Bozkurt’s comment referred to the Asia Minor disaster of 1922: “Who are you? You should know your limits… You rude man, you think these people (the Turks) are Greeks? We were the ones who threw the Greeks in the sea.”
