A 42-year-old member of the far-right Golden Dawn party was led to jail on Wednesday, after he was identified by the victim of an assault committed in Athens’ Ambelokipi district last Friday. According to the 24-year-old student, who was savagely beaten by a group of Golden Dawn supporters near one of the party’s offices, he was “one thousand percent certain” that the suspect was among his attackers.
The 42-year-old was remanded in custody after testifying before the 14th examining magistrate, when he came face-to-face with the victim, who again identified him “beyond a shadow of a doubt.” The magistrate also converted the original charges against him — one criminal charge of robbery and a misdemeanor charge of dangerous bodily harm — to criminal charges of robbery and intentional grievous bodily harm.
The 42-year-old denied the charges and claimed that he was targeted by an individual that had a past grievance against him dating several years, who had threatened him in the past. He suggested that the student testifying against him had been influenced by images published in the media. He also produced two witnesses that provided him with an alibi, confirming his claim that he was not in the vicinity at the time of the attack.(source: ana-mpa)
