The government will not legislate if there is not a comprehensive agreement that will include the debt issue, government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos on Wednesday said in statements to Star TV. Tzanakopoulos expressed optimism that the negotiation on the second programme review will soon have a positive outcome.

“The aim of the government is to have a comprehensive agreement. This means that if there is no agreement on all issues, nothing has been agreed,” he underlined and added: “First is the staff level agreement, followed by the negotiation on the medium-term measures on debt and the primary surpluses for 2019 and then the legislation of the main part of the agreed issues. Meanwhile, there is a possibility to legislate some secondary issues that have already been agreed with the institutions. For example, we have today the extrajudicial settlement. Such issues that have not caused a political conflict.”

On the Public Power Corporation (PPC), he said that the government is “solid” in protecting its public status while it is not going to retreat on labor issues. Regarding mass layoffs, including the lock out and the pensions, he said that efforts are being made in order to achieve a “gentle adjustment.”

Asked if he is afraid of an “acciden,t” as former Prime Minister Costas Simitis said in an interview, Tzanakopoulos replied: “I am not afraid of any accident. There are no accidents when the future of Europe is at stake. Everyone has the prudence and the sense of responsibility to stabilize the Greek economy.”(source: ana-mpa)
