Greece and Turkey have to find ways to de-escalate tension between them, said a State Department official on the occasion of the one-day visit of U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson to Turkey, a Real.gr report says.

Briefing the press, the U.S. State Department official was asked, among other things, about the verbal attacks Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan launches against Europe and the tension created between his country and neighboring Greece, and if the Secretary of State intends to mediate.

According to the report, when asked about Athens saying that the Greek armed forces are ready to respond to any provocation by the Turkish side, the State Department official said: “Our position was and remains that our allies in NATO must find ways to work together to reduce tensions. The purpose of this trip is not specific to the Secretary involved in this.”

“But obviously he (Rex Tillerson) can do whatever he can to move things in that direction, it would be something that could be included in the agenda. But it is not something that the purpose of this trip is about,” the State Department official added.
