During a press conference on Thursday, the spokesman for the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Jerry Rice, told reporters that his organization wants to participate in Greece’s bailout, but only after they receive a solid commitment from all involved regarding debt restructure.

“We need to advance this commitment to a powerful package to debt relief, which however can be activated later,” he said, adding, “to participate in the IMF Greek plan, the issue of debt is as important reforms.

The reiteration of the IMF’s desire to stay an active part in the financial discussion revolving around Greece’s future are not new. Just last month German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble revealed that Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), told Schaeuble that her organization plans to stay engaged in the bailout talks for Greece. The one thing always holding them back boils down to how to proceed with the debt relief that country so badly needs.

The IMF will debate debt relief following more discussions in reaching an agreement on reforms. Spokesman Rice refused to put a date on the matter saying that the subject of debt relief should be one that is left to evolve on its own.
