On Thursday dozens of people gathered outside of the courthouse in Patras in support of their mayor, Kostas Peletidis, in the lawsuit that was launched against him in 2015 by the far-right political party, Golden Dawn. Those gathered were demanding the end to his prosecution, sources say.
The hearing charges Peletidis, who is backed by the country’s communist party, the KKE, with dereliction of duty. The charges came about following the mayor as well as the city council, in a unanimous vote, denying the request of Michalis Arvanitis, a former Golden Dawn MP candidate, to use a municipality venue for his campaign.
The mayor is not backing down from his position as ekathimerini.com reported that he reiterated earlier this month that the Patras municipal authority will “continue its fight to stop Golden Dawn from passing on its ideology, propaganda and racist poison,” adding, “It’s a political issue regarding the protection of this city against racist messages…Patras will never become a place where those who want to divide us are active.”
