According to estimates, the cost to the public from people dodging fares for public transportation in Greece comes to an annual amount of 40 and 60 million euros.

As an increasing amount of people opt to dodge public transportation fares and take a free ride, Greek authorities have been on a mission to install new electronic ticket validating machines at stations throughout Athens. However, there have been several acts of vandalism by groups of young men who have been destroying the newly installed machines.

Data reveals that the acts of vandalism have thus far resulted in 127 machines — 80 new ticket validating machines, 41 ticket barriers and six ticket dispensers — which have all been destroyed in Athens since last summer when they were installed. The numbers keep increasing as in the past 16 days, authorities report that 42 machines were destroyed.

Police have responded to the incidents of vandalism by deploying motorcycle police units to patrol the metro and train stations.
