Police throughout Europe have managed to bust an eel smuggling ring that was sneaking the rare species of eel into China for a substantial profit.
Authorities have reported that arrests were made in Greece and the gang involved in the smuggling ring had members working out of Spain, Italy, France and Portugal as well.
The smuggling route was revealed as a complicated one as the eels were taken from Spain, France and Portugal and exported to China by being transported by road to Italy, before being put on ferries to the Greek ports of Patra or Igoumenitsa where they were then flown from Greece to China for 1,500 euros per kilo, sources reported.
The gang was based in Spain according to the sources who also reported that raids in both Spain and Greece on Friday resulted in some 7 million euros being seized by the police.
