The 2017 Patras Carnival commenced on Saturday at Agios Georgios Square as fireworks lit the night sky and thousands of people celebrated until the morning hours.
“Faithful to tradition, Patras continues the most authentic folk festival with the unique carnival, against the economic crisis and unpopular policies, which brutally affected the wider population and its most vibrant and promising part, the young people,” said inter alia Patras Mayor Kostas Peletidis said while announcing the commencement of the carnival.
Revellers had the opportunity to watch the history of Patras Carnival unfolding before their eyes with music and sketches on two stages at Agios Georgios Square.
The history of Patras Carnival was presented in decades, beginning in 1900. There were 10 decades, with one scene each, excluding the 1930, 1940 decades when the carnival was interrupted because of the war.
After the history presentation, bands and dancers performed the most popular songs of Patras Carnival.
