As the final numbers are tallied, data released from the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) shows that 2016 was a fruitful year for tourism in Greece.
In fact, the rates at which tourism rose from 2015 was at an astounding 9 percent according to SETE, an increase that was much welcomed by Greece that saw 16.87 million air arrivals in 2016.
The numbers are perhaps not exactly precise as the only airport that excluded air arrivals of people living in Greece was the Athens international airport, while the other airports recorded all air arrivals regardless of the passenger’s country of origin. However, SETE is confident that the increase was substantial, none the less.
Flights to Greece across the board for all of the country’s airports rose to 461,161, which was up 3.8 percent compared to 2015 — of those flights 271,451 were incoming international flights.
Other figures that the tourism organization released concern road arrivals, which also rose some 0.6 percent to equal 12.04 million in 2016.
